How to find & test your main water shutoff valve

  1. It’s imperative to know where your main water shut off is beforehand in case of an emergency. Here are some tips to help you locate and test your main water valve(s).

    • If your home is being flooded or imminent property damage is occurring - you need to shut off the water. If you cannot or are unable to find your water shut off  immediately call us (or any licensed plumber) OR call your municipal/water company emergency number for help.

  2. All homes are different. There are a few different possible locations for your main water valve, let’s identify all the possible locations (split screen of locations):

    • Check along the threshold/foundation of your home along an exterior/interior wall, typically near a garage or front of home. (image)

    • If you cannot locate that valve, you can typically find one in a subterranean box with a concrete lid near the sidewalk in front of your home. Lift the lift and you may see a handle

    • There are times where neither shut off valves are available - this is typical in older homes. If this is the case, it would require you to call the city or a licensed plumber to come to your location for assistance.

  3. Once you identify the valve, rotate the handle clockwise. Make sure you don't use too much force and if you cannot manually close the valve then call us or a licensed plumber.

  4. Once the valve has been rotated all the way, test that the water shut off is in effect by running a faucet to make sure the water is off. If water keeps running then please call us or a licensed plumber for assistance.
